SMArt 155 – proven reliability and accuracy

Meppen, June 2005

German Authority fired the first two lots of SMArt 155, DM 702, delivered to the German customer at WTD91, Meppen proving ground, for ammunition surveillance after 5 years storage time. The test firing was witnessed by several official delegations from foreign countries.

SMArt 155 was fired from PzH 2000 at long range with high propelling charge by a WTD91 gun crew against the regular tank target scenario in compliance with the lot acceptance test procedure. All projectiles showed full function. So the unique functional reliability of SMArt 155 close to 100% has been confirmed again. Next ammunition surveillance firing will take place in mid 2006 at the same place and according to same procedures.

Picatinny Arsenal, June 2005

SMArt 155 successfully completed the US "Release for use" program for in service use by the US Artillery Forces. During the course of this program SMArt 155 performed well in the desert, at all times of day, against clean and countermeasure targets.

Al Qua'a, October 2004

SMArt 155 was fired from an operational G6 self propelled howitzer in hot desert environment against a small target scenario of armored vehicles on very long range by a military gun crew. All SMArt155 projectiles and submunitions showed full function.

This firing again impressively demonstrated the unique precision, performance and effectiveness of SMArt 155, but this time in desert environment and for another artillery firing platform and propelling charge system.

System / Advantages

SMArt 155 (DM 702) is an intelligent, autonomous and highly effective fire and forget artillery projectile with unmatched cost effectiveness. SMArt 155 puts the Artillery into the position to effectively engage and destroy any kind of armoured targets – whether stationary or moving at maximum speed – with pinpoint accuracy and a small number of rounds.

Due to its multi-mode sensor system, SMArt 155 can be used in all weather and terrain environments, including urban areas, and is prepared to cope with today's and future countermeasures. Thanks to its unique penetration performance SMArt 155 destructs any kind of armoured targets up to main battle tanks including reactive armour. Redundant self-destruction devices completely avoid duds. Minimum collateral damage appears.

The short duration of a mission prevents hostile target acquisition and counterfire, and thereby increases the safety of own troops. The small number of rounds per mission leads to further advantages:

  • fewer weapon systems
  • less support equipment
  • less personnel
  • reduced logistics

resulting in fast redeployment of units and considerably improved responsiveness of the artillery forces. SMArt 155 meets all relevant Nato standards and JBMOU requirements. It can be fired from any 155 mm barrel.

Production Status

SMArt 155 already is in service with Germany, Greece and Switzerland. Further lots will be delivered in 2005/ 2006. SMArt 155 extraordinary quality standards have been proven maximum product reliability in more than 20 live firings for Lot Acceptance and operational firing.
